The oldest myth that we know of is the myth of the Goddess; the development of this myth over thousands of years of human history shows how we have gained an understanding of ourselves through the images of gods and goddesses. However, the Goddess seems to have vanished from the realm of the human spirit – along with a part of ourselves. In this study, both academic and clear, the authors, drawing on poetry and mythology, art and literature, archaeology and psychology, demonstrate how the myth of the Goddess has disappeared from our traditional notions of the divine, as well as the consequences of this loss.
Anne Baring, born in 1931, was educated in England and America, and lectured on history at Oxford. In 1961, after returning from a journey to the Far East, she wrote (under the pseudonym Anne Gaige) The One Work: A Journey Towards the Self, a story about her search for the deep unity of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. For twelve years, Baring was a dress designer in her own shop in London. She is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology and combines her writing career with the practice of an analyst.
Jules Cashford taught philosophy at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and continued her studies in literature as a graduate student at Cambridge on a Carnegie scholarship, specializing in the study of tragedy. For several years, she worked as a research supervisor in English at Trinity College, Cambridge, and translated the "Homeric Hymns" from Greek. Cashford is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, currently teaches mythology, and is the author of several articles on myths and symbolism.
