Wooden Horses

Fedor Alexandrovich Abramov (1920–1983) — one of the most famous Russian writers of the 20th century, a representative of the so-called "village prose" — a popular literary movement in Soviet literature during the 1960s–1980s. Abramov gained success with the publication of his debut novel "Brothers and Sisters" in 1958, which tells the story of life in a Pomor Old Believer village during the Great Patriotic War. The writer traveled extensively throughout Russia and never lost touch with his small homeland, which he dedicated his work to — including stories and novellas collected in this edition: "Wooden Horses," "Pelageya," and "Alka" (a sort of trilogy about Russian women), "Fatherless Children," "Mamonikha," "Once Upon a Time There Was a Salmon," and others. The main thought of Abramov, present in every one of his works, is the significance of the native home as the foundation of human existence. Even today, readers appreciate Abramov's stories and novellas for their attention to the fates of ordinary people, their everyday concerns, sorrows, and joys.
