Ivan Mikhailovich Voronov — this was the name of Archimandrite Alipius before his tonsure — fought for four years on the front lines of the Great Patriotic War and traveled the path from Moscow to Berlin. Then, for another thirteen years, he defended the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery, protecting it from closure. Soon after the Great Patriotic War, thousands of cathedrals and churches were blown up, closed down, or repurposed as storage facilities, and most of the higher spiritual educational institutions were abolished. Almost all monasteries were dispersed. Many priests ended up in prisons. Only two monasteries remained active in Russia — the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, reluctantly preserved by the authorities for foreigners to see, and the Pskovo-Pechersky Monastery.
