The Life and Struggle of the Bialystok Ghetto

Memories of Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Voronezh State Pedagogical University, Sergey Samuilovich Berknar, a native of Bialystok, participant of the underground resistance in the Bialystok ghetto (1941–1943), and later a partisan of the "Fohrays" squad and the Kalinowski brigade.

In a vivid and lively language, the author writes about life in pre-war Bialystok, when it was still Polish, about his family, the onset of the war, and the first repressions against the Jewish population, as well as the events in which he participated directly as a young man. The book, written in the late 1990s, also includes testimonies and memories of eyewitnesses of the uprising in the Bialystok ghetto (August 1943), photographs and documents collected by the author in the post-war years.
