General Artificial Intelligence

In his book, Julian Togelius examines technical approaches to creating a more general artificial intelligence and reflects on how such intelligence might affect the development of humanity.
He begins with examples of narrow AI, which surpass human capabilities in certain tasks. Interestingly, such systems have existed for more than fifty years. He then considers the very concept of general intelligence through the lens of psychology, ethology, and computer science. Next, he describes two main technical directions in the development of more general AI: creating foundational models through self-learning and open learning in virtual environments. In the concluding chapters of the book, deeper questions are discussed: will general AI achieve consciousness, will it pose a danger to humanity, and how might its emergence change the structure of society.
