Jack Vance takes the reader to the star cluster Alastor, which contains hundreds of unique planets, each with its own culture, customs, orders, and social structure. And its own stories.
Trullion: Alastor 2262. A former soldier named Gliness returns home after many years of service, but instead of a warm welcome, he faces intrigues in his family and chaos in the family estate. The only way to earn money and restore order is the popular game "husseid" on Trullion. Gliness quickly finds a team and makes the necessary connections, but his excitement coupled with talent and natural resourcefulness leads to unexpected discoveries.
Vist: Alastor 1716. A young artist named Jantiff decides to visit the planet Vist, known for its unique lighting and incredible sunsets. Upon arriving at his destination, he becomes acquainted with the local culture of egalitarianism, which is based on the concept of equality for all inhabitants. But this ideology is not embraced by everyone. Unknowingly, Jantiff becomes a witness to a conspiracy against the established regime, the local government, and the very Connatig – the supreme ruler of Alastor. Will the outsider find help and prevent disaster?
Marun: Alastor 933. A young man is found on one of the planets of the cluster. He does not remember who he is or where he came from. In the Connatig's hospital, the doctors manage to determine the patient's home planet – Marun, surrounded by four suns. The young man, named "Pardero," returns home, wanting to learn about his past and understand who took away his memory and who wished him harm on a planet where the very word "murder" evokes an animalistic fear among its inhabitants, comparable to the darkness that descends so rarely that it instills a genuine sense of horror in everyone. Who is Pardero really, and what secrets does his past hold?
"Jack Vance is one of the truly significant science fiction writers of his time."
