The action takes place in the near future in California, where a new drug - the substance "S" - is rapidly spreading. A drug enforcement agent works undercover among users and small dealers, observing their connections and trying to reach the source of supplies. The job requires complete disguise, but the boundary between work and personal life begins to blur. Addiction alters perception, heightens paranoia, and destroys the ability to distinguish the role from one's own identity.
