The book includes the most famous stories by A.P. Chekhov: "Kashtanka", "Chameleon", "Vanka", "The Man in a Case", "Ward No. 6", "The Lady with the Dog", and others, the study of which is included in the school curriculum.

Conciseness, striking humor, irony, and rich content make them unique and unmatched in world literature. Maxim Gorky wrote: "No one understood as clearly and subtly as Anton Chekhov the tragedy of the small things in life; no one before him could so ruthlessly and truthfully depict the shameful and dreary picture of people's lives in the dim chaos of bourgeois everyday life".
