Alexander Ostrovsky (1823—1886) — a great Russian playwright, the creator of modern national theater.
At his father's insistence, he enrolled in the law faculty but dropped out due to his passionate love for theater.
However, much of what he heard while working at the commercial court Ostrovsky later used in his work.
The heroine of «The Forest» — the not-so-young landowner Gurmyzhskaya — seeks to forcibly marry her poor relative to the young man she herself is in love with, leaving her without an inheritance.
But her plans are disrupted by the suddenly returned nephew — actor Neshchastlivtsev, who pretends to be a wealthy retired officer.
This collection also includes three more plays dedicated to actors and dealers: «Wolves and Sheep», «Talents and Admirers», and «The Guilty Without Guilt».
