Vitusch Bering. The Great Northern Expedition

Vitusch Bering headed the Great Northern Expedition, which resulted in the creation of navigation maps of the northern and eastern coasts of Russia, exploration of routes to America and Japan, the discovery of many islands, and descriptions of the nature and lifestyle of the local population.

Bering himself reached the shores of America on the packet boat "Saint Peter." This voyage became a true feat of Russian navigators. The set goals were achieved, but the price for the discoveries was high - human lives, including that of the captain-commander Vitus Bering himself.

Thanks to Russian navigators, modern Russia became a great power. And the colossal legacy of the Great Northern Expedition is still in demand today.
