These memoirs, started in 1974 at Robben Island prison, were completed by Nelson Mandela after 27 years of imprisonment, soon after his release in 1990. Rarely has the life of an individual been so closely intertwined with the public struggle and the fate of a people. Born and raised in the rural South of Africa, in the royal family of Thembu, Nelson Mandela became one of the leaders of the African National Congress, a political organization of the black population of the Republic of South Africa. He went through underground movements, armed struggle, prison, and his life became a symbol of the fight for freedom for millions of people around the world, gradually making him a legend, the one-of-a-kind leader capable of helping his country escape the deadlock in which South Africa had been for over forty years, due to the complete deprivation of rights of the black population and police dictatorship. Perhaps Nelson Mandela's greatest achievement is the transition without civil war and with minimal human casualties from a discriminatory regime of white minority rule over the black majority to a democratic form of government.

This autobiography is the most important document of one of the greatest events in modern history and a unique testimony to the struggle for human dignity.
