Fiefs of England is a strategic game about power, land, arranged marriages, and carefully hidden daggers of dishonor. You will lead a family of lords and guide it to greatness through politics, military campaigns, church intrigues, and - if absolutely necessary - a profitable marriage.
The game board features a map of England with towns, roads, and ports. Your lords march across it, capture castles and mills, replenish the treasury with taxes, and lazily correspond with allies through carrier pigeons. Just like in real medieval times, but without the plague - it is replaced by disaster cards.
Men in your family can rise to the rank of viscount, count, duke, bishop, and even archbishop. Women can become abbesses. Each title brings victory points and a voting right in the selection of a king. Yes, they elect a king by voting here - the most democratic process in medieval history, especially if you have a dagger of dishonor marker in your hand.
Event cards will throw uprisings, murders, and unexpected guests from the north at you. Relics - from the Holy Grail to the skull of some saint - will give additional advantages to those who are not averse to trading in relics. And Flemish and French crossbowmen are ready to serve whoever pays more - principled people, but flexible.
Victory is achieved quietly and without unnecessary noise: 3 victory points alone or 4 in alliance with another player. Victory condition checks begin from the fifth round. Betraying an ally just before this check is historically accurate and highly recommended by the authors.
