History and Culture of the Indian Temple. Book III: The Aesthetics of the Temple

The book discusses painting, sculpture, dance, vocal and instrumental music, as well as literature and verbal creativity that have developed over centuries within the framework of religious culture. It addresses the interconnection and mutual influence of all forms of art, their origins, and how they found their way into the temple. A separate chapter is devoted to the temple as an educational institution and the important role played by sacred texts, libraries, and poetic competitions in South Indian temples. In addition, the book examines issues related to ancient teachings on castes, iconographic canons of Hindu deities, erotic motifs, and symbolism related to the cult of fertility. It also pays close attention to the theme of preserving cultural heritage, the purpose, and the spiritual component of Indian art.
