In the 1990s, large Russian industry was on the brink of survival. Established economic ties were destroyed, and the advent of the era of open markets demonstrated the enormous lag of post-Soviet production compared to competitors in developed countries. Some sectors, such as microelectronics and civil aircraft manufacturing, almost disappeared under the pressure of imported supplies. Others survived but limited their development to the domestic market.
This book tells the story of a rare exception. Over three decades, SIBUR managed to create a new industry from the ruins of Soviet petrochemistry: not only building factories but also forming a new production and management culture. The authors - leading Russian journalists - thoroughly analyze the company's journey, its successes and mistakes, which ultimately allowed SIBUR to place Russia among the world's largest producers of modern synthetic materials.
