Everything has gone too far

On Thanksgiving Day in 2016, a few weeks after the elections, journalist Reese Kinnick runs out of patience. In the heat of a political argument, he strikes his daughter's new husband – a religious fanatic and conspiracy theorist, and then, horrified by his actions, as well as by what is happening in the world and the state of his own mental health, he throws his smartphone out of the car window and hides in a cabin in the remote forests of the northwest. Seven years later, he barely recognizes the grandchildren who suddenly appear on his doorstep. Their mother has disappeared, and staying with their father, who has become involved with a group of radically minded Christian nationalists, is dangerous. So what if Reese's shack has no electricity or proper plumbing, and raccoons regularly raid his supplies? He is willing to do anything to help his family. When armed militants kidnap the children, the hero realizes that he will have to return to the crazy world he once escaped from. With the help of a retired cop with bipolar disorder and his former lover Lucy, Reese embarks on a mad journey through the ruins of the life he once fled.
