1884. Naples is engulfed in a cholera epidemic. Count Fabio Romani lives in a happy marriage with his beautiful wife Nina in a magnificent villa among orange groves. One morning, while strolling by the harbor, he suddenly falls into a coma for unknown reasons, but those around him think he has also died from cholera. After some time, Fabio wakes up in a coffin, in the family tomb of the Romani family. He manages to escape from the tomb and rushes home to his wife and son. But instead of a warm welcome, he accidentally overhears a conversation between Nina and his friend Guido, who, it turns out, were not mourning him at all, but were glad that he had died, for now he would not interfere with their affair. Fabio's heart is broken, and he decides to take revenge on them and goes into hiding.
