Gnaeus Pompeius, nicknamed the Great, is today known primarily as the unfortunate rival of Caesar in the civil wars that ultimately led to the downfall of the Roman Republic.

But besides this, he was a famous general and statesman, one of the most influential people in Rome.

His glorious deeds and tragic death were remembered many centuries later, when the Romans and their empire had long since gone into the past.

The book by ancient historians Anton Korolenkov and Evgeny Smikov is the first Russian-language biography of Pompey, based on a wide range of sources and highlighting the life of the hero against the broad backdrop of Roman history in the 1st century BC.
