A History of Italy in Modern Times

Evgeny Tarle's book "A History of Italy in Modern Times" was first published in the early 20th century and has not been released in modern Russian orthography. Meanwhile, this is a very interesting work, unique in terms of the scope of events covered. Together with the book "A History of Italy in the Middle Ages," also published by "Lomonosov," it provides a complete picture of what was happening on the Apennine Peninsula from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the unification of Italy in 1870 into a single state. Through the Renaissance, Tarle leads the reader to the Napoleonic Wars, showing how the authority of the papal throne gradually crumbles, how national feelings grow among Italians in the struggle against Austrian occupation, and how, finally, under the Savoy dynasty, the Kingdom of Italy emerges, incorporating Venice, Naples, and, ultimately, as the final chord, the Papal States.
