Through the Renaissance, Tarle leads the reader to the Napoleonic Wars, showing how the authority of the papal throne gradually crumbles, how national feelings grow among Italians in the struggle against Austrian occupation, and how, finally, under the Savoy dynasty, the Kingdom of Italy emerges, incorporating Venice, Naples, and, ultimately, as the final chord, the Papal States.
