I Loved Suffering

Saint Archbishop Luke, Professor Voino-Yasenetsky - our contemporary. His earthly journey ended in 1961. In his eighty-four years of life, the archbishop experienced a great deal: the Russo-Japanese War, the overthrow of the monarchy in Russia, the establishment of new power, the church schism of 1923-1924, persecution for faith and preaching, the terrible years of the "Yezhovshchina," eleven years of imprisonment and exile. The church world honors and remembers him as a courageous confessor of the Christian faith, while the secular world recognizes him as an outstanding surgeon who saved the lives of a huge number of people. This small brochure is an autobiography of Saint Luke, which he dictated to his secretary, E. P. Leykfeld, when he was already completely blind. This narrative, written in a simple, everyday language, shows us how the events of an era intertwine with the life of one specific person, providing him with immeasurable space for personal heroism in the name of faith and people.
