The Road of the Lonely Dog

South Dakota, a dry summer of 1950. A freight train rushes through the night prairie, and in one of the cars, two Lakota boys—Reuben and Levi—are hiding. They have run away from home and are now hiding from a government agent who is supposed to take Reuben to an Indian boarding school.
By a stroke of luck, they encounter the Steinbach couple. With their support, Reuben and Levi decide to travel across the endless plains to the quarries in western Minnesota to obtain stone for their great-grandfather's new sacred pipe. After all, the beloved pipe that the Lonely Dogs passed down from generation to generation was ruthlessly shattered by the very agent who is pursuing them.
The boys have a long journey ahead—a troubling, dangerous one. But at the same time, it will allow them to see and understand much, including how the land shapes the people who live, love, dream, and die upon it.
… The story that began as a chase transforms into a complex drama of intersecting fates, where each hero must open their heart, forgive themselves, and finally find a home.
