"Rickshaw" is one of the best novels by Lao She, considered a classic of 20th century Chinese literature.
For ages, rickshaws have run through the bustling streets of Beijing – powerless people, on the very bottom social rung, harnessed to a cart, delivering passengers around the city.
Lao She tells the story of one of them – the orphan Xiangzi, nicknamed Camel – a simple-hearted and honest guy whose cherished dream was to save money for his own rickshaw, to ensure a stable income and be independent. Xiangzi is determined, denying himself everything, he works from dawn to dusk for four years and almost reaches his cherished goal, but in an instant the rickshaw loses everything…
