For the first time, traditional folk patterns are presented with comments explaining the symbolism of the embroideries. Throughout the centuries of their existence, embroideries have undergone fascinating metamorphoses, according to which we have constructed the patterns. Each pattern presented in the book was once stitched by a real craftswoman, and perhaps by her grandmother or great-grandmother, carefully preserved and collected by researchers during expeditions. For the convenience of modern needlewomen, we have redrawn these patterns and placed them on a counting grid so that every interested embroiderer can consciously touch her own heritage.
