Fashion in the Country of Deficit

In the 1960s-1980s in the USSR, the House of Models was not only in Moscow but also in provincial cities. The history of the House of Models in Perm is narrated by Yulia Papushina: the author introduces the reader to... provincial organizations that developed fashion in the region and to those who worked there — Soviet fashion designers, art historians, and models. Readers will learn why fashionable clothing was in short supply in Soviet times, what Soviet marketing was like, and how quality control was maintained. The publication is illustrated with materials from local and personal archives, printed publications of the Perm House of Models, and archival video materials.
Yulia Papushina is a teacher and researcher, a candidate of sociological sciences, and an associate professor at HSE Perm. Her academic interests include the sociology of fashion and consumption, and creative industries. She gives public lectures on the Soviet fashion industry and its regional dimension. Together with the archive of the city of Perm, she created a collection of documents on the history of fashion in the region. She is the author of several publications on the history of the Soviet fashion industry. She lives and works in Perm.
