This book consists of non-fiction stories. For many years, the author has been searching for them in archives and libraries to tell about the unknown, yet very interesting pages of St. Petersburg's past. You will read about rulers, ministers, and... courtiers - and you can discover those "strokes" and "traits" that didn't make it into their official biographies.
The main characters of the book are the ordinary citizens of St. Petersburg from the 19th to the early 20th century. Students, housewives, officers, janitors, security guards, artists - all those who breathed the humid air of the Northern capital, admired the beauty of the streets and squares, smiled at the rare sunshine, mourned and rejoiced at the events of everyday life.
Together, they created a special, unique atmosphere of St. Petersburg that inspires us to this day.
