The book reflects the scientific views of leading European scholars in the field of Oriental studies on the history of Muslim empires in the 15th–19th centuries. Along with studies dedicated to the rise and fall of great powers and ruling dynasties in the Near and Middle East, it examines the processes occurring on the periphery of the Islamic world. For instance, Professor Berthold Spuler describes the spread of Islam to the north, analyzes the situation in the Bukhara Khanate, Kokand, and Khiva during the late Timurids. The book also includes materials dedicated to the formation of states in North-Western and Equatorial Africa, the history of Iran during the rule of the Safavid dynasty, and the last three centuries of India's independence under the Great Mughals.
