Azef. The Antihero of the Russian Revolution

At the beginning of the 20th century, when the Russian Empire was shaken by terror and revolutions, the inconspicuous electrical engineer Yevgeny (Evno) Azef led two secret and dangerous lives. He simultaneously worked as a secret police agent fighting against revolutionaries and headed the Combat Organization of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, which orchestrated assassinations of high officials and members of the royal family. He would lead the police on false trails and betray his fellow underground members.
After being exposed, Azef transformed from a legend of revolutionary struggle into an outcast, and his name became a symbol of disgraceful opportunism. However, writer Valery Shubinsky managed to reveal in the double agent primarily a human being – with his attachments, known moral limitations, and even political convictions. In turbulent times, when the moral compass of society is finally broken, getting acquainted with the real story of a sinister cynic can not only disconcert but also sober one up.
