The collection consists of stories by Viktor Astafyev from different years, permeated with love for the Motherland, both great and small, largely autobiographical, real, growing from the very heart. Early-maturing children of the war era, the difficult rural life, the... not-so-tender, but painfully beautiful nature of Siberia — everything that Viktor Astafyev wrote about so sincerely and tenderly lived within him, was an inseparable part of his fate and personality.
The writer was born not far from Krasnoyarsk, in the harsh taiga region, fought on the front lines during the Great Patriotic War, and was seriously wounded several times. After the war, he changed many professions, but always sought to express in words what stirred his soul. And what stirred him was the fate of his native land, its children, its forests, rivers, and lakes.
Viktor Astafyev is a recognized master of "village prose," his stories — about childhood, about war, about nature — are full of gratitude for the opportunity to live and see the beauty of his country, to belong to his people, and to share in their sorrows and joys.
