Satanic Tango

“Satanic Tango” — a world-famous novel by a recognized European classic, laureate of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature, as well as the International Booker Prize. Written in 1985, the novel is structured like a tango: the action follows the figures of the dance, leading the characters first forward and then back again, to the beginning. In socialist Hungary, poor peasants from a crumbling agricultural cooperative get drunk, gossip, and dream of breaking into the big world. Suddenly, they receive news that a man thought to be dead is returning to the village. Energetic and charming, this newcomer from the beyond promises them a new wonderful life, igniting hope in the people comparable to the expectation of a messiah. This brilliant parable-like book in the spirit of Kafka and Beckett has been adapted by the famous master of auteur cinema, Bela Tarr. The film has been awarded at the Berlin Film Festival and received the honorary Belgian award “Golden Age”.
