Vera

Elizabeth von Arnim is a British writer of Australian descent, known for her witty and lyrical works about women's lives in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
"Vera" is a partly autobiographical novel inspired by her own marriage. It tells the story of a young woman, Lucy, who marries a widower, Everard. Soon, Lucy realizes that her marriage is a trap, where her husband unconsciously compares her to the ghost of his deceased wife, Vera. Von Arnim creates a suffocating atmosphere, where the home becomes a metaphor for psychological oppression, and the image of Vera is an obsession that cannot be escaped.
