Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy turned to short prose both in his early and late years. His creative journey began with the novella "Childhood." One of his last works was also a novella – "Hadji Murat," published after the writer's death. For both critics and the writer himself, short prose was no less valuable and significant than "Anna Karenina" and "War and Peace." In it, as in the novels, Tolstoy delves into the inner world of man, exploring the dialectics of his soul. It is no coincidence that the spiritual quests of the characters in Tolstoy's novellas and stories – Nikolushka Irtenev, Dmitry Olenin, Dmitry Nekhlyudov, and others – still resonate with modern readers today.
The book includes works by Tolstoy from different years: "Childhood. Adolescence. Youth," "Sevastopol Stories," "Cossacks," "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," "The Kreutzer Sonata," "Hadji Murat," and other stories and novellas.
The book reproduces rare illustrations by artists who were contemporaries of L.N. Tolstoy: A. Apsit, B. Zvorikin, V. Komarov, K. Lebedev, Z. Pichugin.
