Having successfully graduated from university, Skeeter returns to her hometown in Mississippi. Across the country, there are mass protests against racial segregation, but in small conservative... Jackson, black people are still disenfranchised. Soon the girl sadly realizes that she cannot find her place either at home or in her circle of friends: her friends have long since married, had children, and become housewives. Skeeter herself wants to achieve something greater in life, dreams of a writing career, and strives to make the world a better place - and she has an idea of how to do it. She enlists the support of an editor from a major New York publishing house and secretly begins the difficult and extremely dangerous work that will require the help of domestic workers.
