Resurrection

The case of embezzlement of money and poisoning of merchant Smelkov is being heard in the district court.

Prince Dmitry Nekhlyudov, one of the jurors, recognizes in the accused prostitute Katyusha Maslova — a sweet girl whom he seduced and abandoned in his youth.

Tormented by pangs of conscience, he decides to help Katyusha. Nekhlyudov is ready to follow her to hard labor in Siberia and even marry her to atone for his guilt.

«Resurrection» — the last novel by Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910), which addresses themes of responsibility, guilt, and the spiritual «resurrection» of the soul.

The writer was inspired by a real court case recounted by lawyer Anatoly Koni and personal experiences.
