The events of the novel take place in a rural immigrant community in Nebraska from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The main character is Alexandra Bergson, the daughter of a Swedish immigrant, who takes charge of her family after her father's death. While her younger brothers, Lou and Oscar, are inclined to sell the unproductive land, Alexandra is convinced of its value and makes efforts to make the farm prosperous. After the brothers marry, the land is divided among all, and due to Alexandra's persistence and abilities, she achieves success and financial well-being, which evokes a hidden sense of envy in her brothers. The 'Nebraska Trilogy' — 'O Pioneers!', 'The Song of the Lark', and 'My Ántonia' — stands out not only for telling the struggle against harsh nature and social challenges, but also for conveying the spirit of the era through vivid, multifaceted images of the characters, their cultural roots, and inner experiences. Cather masterfully combines realism with lyricism, showing how land and nature shape the character and fate of people, while also exploring themes of family, identity, and the search for one’s place in a new world. This story is filled not only with the struggle for survival and overcoming hardships, but also with deep human emotions: there is a place for tragic events and forgiveness, internal conflicts and unexpected twists of fate.
