Dog's Heart

We start with the novella by Mikhail Bulgakov "Dog's Heart." In 2025, we will celebrate the centenary of its writing.

The famous professor of Moscow, Philip Philippovich Preobrazhensky, conducts an experiment to humanize a stray dog named Sharik. The first visible success soon turns into a real domestic catastrophe. The patient absorbs the worst traits of his donor, the drunken hooligan Klim Chugunkin, and begins to actively integrate into the new social order…

The novella "Dog's Heart" by Mikhail Bulgakov was written in 1925 during the heyday of the New Economic Policy (NEP) and eugenics, with all its biological oddities such as experiments in rejuvenation and hybridization. The very spirit of the time dictated fantastic plots to the writer, however, the zealous Soviet censorship did not appreciate Bulgakov's humor and closed the way for the "pamphlet on communism and the creation of a new man" to be published.
The work was officially published in the USSR for the first time in 1987 and immediately attracted the attention of filmmakers and theatrical figures.
