Miss Ruth Thorn, a reporter for the city newspaper "Herald", is moving to the countryside for six months to look after her Aunt Jane Hathaway's house while she goes to Europe. The only thing Aunt Jane asked Ruth in her... note, without explaining the reason, was to light the lamp in the eastern window of the attic every evening. The light from the lamp has been continuously burning for five years, and this ritual must be maintained now as well. Ruth begins to immerse herself in the life of the quiet countryside, meeting the mysterious Miss Ainsley, and a young man named Carl Windild. Carl was once a reporter for the "Herald" where Ruth works, but due to vision problems, he is temporarily unable to work, and on the recommendation of an eye doctor, needs to rest for six months; the editor-in-chief suggested he travel to follow Ruth. Feelings gradually develop between Ruth and Carl, and they soon plan a shared future. However, Aunt Jane's return with a new husband changes the usual course of events, and Ruth temporarily moves in with Miss Ainsley. Thus, a few more months of peaceful life pass. Carl and Ruth plan a wedding soon. But one day, Miss Ainsley gets out of bed in a completely different mood than usual and shares her secret with Ruth, explaining the purpose of the lamp in Aunt Jane's house.
