The Dark Butler of Lady Antonia

Lady Antonia de Velviche – The Reader. This is what people call those who possess the rare gift of reading the souls of others. She moves from the capital to a quiet, remote town, where she takes a job at... the local police department, as her gift is invaluable in conducting interrogations. She also hires a butler – a criminal with dozens of serious crimes to his name. Meanwhile, girls start going missing in the town, and later they are found murdered. Rare witnesses claim to have seen a person who looks very much like an ordinary scarecrow – as if lifeless, puppet-like. The department begins an investigation, and Antonia has to conduct a considerable number of interrogations. However, Readers, when they frequently use their gift, lose their sanity and drive mad those whose souls they read. The first suspect, after the interrogation, requires emergency medical assistance, and Lady de Velviche's health is also at risk. But the butler proves to be very timely.
