This book is about how free people became state servants. About how, through the steppe, the Ural Mountains, and the Siberian expanses, at the will of these relentless individuals who came from the Don, Dnieper, Yaik, and Volga rivers, Russia grew. About the tragic and heroic fates of Yermak Timofeich, Ivan Koltso, Matvey Meshcheryak, Cherkas Alexandrov, and other atamans, ensigns, and ordinary Cossacks of Yermak's detachment. The main endeavor of Yermak and his comrades is the Siberian campaign. But that great campaign began in the outskirts of Moscow. This is what the story is about.
