Robespierre

Robespierre, whose name is forever associated with the French Revolution, has always been and remains an enigmatic figure. Having devoted himself entirely to the protection of the people's interests, he ultimately became the executioner of that very people. Starting his... political career with demands for civil equality and the abolition of the death penalty, he ended it by dividing citizens into "virtuous" and "evil" and instituting mass terror. He was both adored and hated; his life turned into legend: some portrayed him as a "golden" figure, a great fighter for the freedom and happiness of the people; others depicted him as a "black" one, a dictator striving for power literally over the bodies of his comrades. There is no definitive answer, and there likely never will be. Only attempts will remain to understand what History warns about through its chosen one, Robespierre.
