The publishing house "Ajax-Press" has released a new guidebook "Amsterdam" in the series "Polyglot. Russian Guide". The guidebook is supplemented with information that will be of interest to the Russian reader. The author offers 13 routes through the Dutch capital.... To navigate the streets of the city, each route is marked on a separate map. Additionally, a separate large map is contained in a transparent pocket on the cover.
Amsterdam… The uniqueness of this city - the largest settlement in the world on stilts - begins with its name, which translates to "dam on the Amstel River". The capital of the Netherlands is at the same time business-like and carefree, strict and exotic - irresistibly attracting tourists from all over the world. The heart of Amsterdam is the Old Town, where wealthy merchant mansions line the canals, and cozy little courtyards invite passersby to rest in the shade of the trees. Areas of modern construction are located closer to the IJ River. In recent years, the eastern part of the city has been completely rebuilt, where elite residential quarters have been constructed on the banks of the bay.

Be sure to visit the Rijksmuseum - the main art museum of the country and the Van Gogh Museum, and check out the City Museum and the Hermitage on the Amstel. The Red Light District (De Wallen) hardly needs an introduction.
While walking through the city, don’t forget to look up: the facades of the houses are adorned with magnificent pediments and amusing decorative elements. In the 14th century, simple gabled wooden pediments were common, then came the pediments in the shape of beaks, intricately carved with chimney-like tops, for storage facilities, and elegant ones that adorned the facades of lavish residences along the canal banks.
