Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock — a prominent British and American film director, producer, and screenwriter, author of films such as «Psycho», «Vertigo», «North by Northwest», «Rear Window» and many others. He managed to combine the discoveries of German Expressionism and Soviet avant-garde, elevated the art of editing to a new level, and refreshed genre cinema, becoming a master of «suspense» and horror. No one could scare better than he did. He surrounded himself with an aura of mystery and mystique, becoming not just a director, whom French critics would call an «author», but also a pop icon, a hero of his films, and rarely did his film go without a cameo by the director, a tiny role that Hitchcock played with his characteristic brilliance. In 1979, shortly before the death of the master, Elizabeth II knighted him. How did Hitchcock go down in the history of cinema and how do his classic films hold up now?
