Xu-Yun (1840-1959) is the most famous enlightened teacher of the Chan tradition in the 20th century in China. He attained enlightenment without the help of teachers and revived the declining teachings solely... through the power of his own insight, becoming something of a living legend of his time. His life and example evoke the same feelings of reverence and inspiration in the minds of Chinese Buddhists that Tibetan Buddhists feel towards Milarepa.
The book contains the autobiography of Xu-Yun and his teachings. The first edition of the book was published in 1996 under the title "Empty Cloud." This corrected and expanded edition, verified against the original Chinese text, includes new materials, including Xu-Yun's teachings from the second Chan seven-day retreat.
