Roman History: Volume I. Volume II. Volume III. Volume V (set of 4 books)

"Roman History" — a monumental historical work by the German researcher Theodor Mommsen, occupying a special position in the world literature on classical studies.

Mommsen was a student of such renowned historians as F. Schlosser, H. Siebel, I. G. Droysen, whose influence is clearly evident in his early works.

Mommsen continued the tradition of factographic description of the history of Ancient Rome, which originated in Germany in the early 19th century.

Mommsen's "Roman History" is a detailed work covering a multi-century period of state development.

The first three volumes were published in 1854–1856, and they include events from the founding of Rome to the era of Julius Caesar.

The fourth volume was not completely written; materials for it are only found in Mommsen’s drafts and, apparently, reflect the history of the rule of Roman emperors up to Diocletian.

The fifth volume, presented in this edition, was published in 1885; it describes life in the "provinces": northern Italy, Spain, Gaul, Roman Germany, Britain, etc.
