The Army of the Roman Empire at the Beginning of the New Era

The book by the outstanding archaeologist Graham Webster, who led the excavations of legionary fortresses and forts during the Roman conquest of Britain, is dedicated to the history of the Empire's armed forces in the 1st–2nd centuries AD. The author introduces readers to the organization and composition of the army, the peculiarities of recruitment and training of soldiers, tactics in battles and campaigns. Being a recognized expert on military equipment, Webster describes in detail the weapons of the legionaries, armor and equipment, as well as the "non-military" aspects of army life – pay, rewards, food and medical care, burial and religious rituals. The historian also addresses issues of border policy, and talks about the types and structure of military camps, forts, and the adjacent civilian settlements.
