Russian Bath. History and Traditions

The bathhouse is an inseparable ancient element of Russian life. Since time immemorial, in Russian tradition, the bath has always been not only a place to wash and cleanse one's body, but also a special, almost sacred structure, where purification occurs not only on a physical level but also on a spiritual one.

This publication contains unique texts that vividly and pictorially present the history and traditions of the Russian bath. Separate chapters of the book are dedicated to the testimonies of ancient chroniclers, the memories of European travelers from the 16th to the 18th centuries, the works of Russian writers and historians, bathing customs, beliefs, and omens.
