In the VII century, the Chinese monk Xuanzang went to India for books. Upon his return, he wrote travel notes that became a hit for centuries not only for the Chinese and Indians but, after translation into English and other... languages, for all those who are passionate about Buddhism, travels, and books. In the XVI century, a huge fantasy novel titled "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng'en appeared on the given topic, and in the XVII century, another one: "Supplement to Journey to the West" by Dong Yue. The novel "Circle of Wind" can be considered a new variation on the theme of wandering in search of Eastern wisdom. Its heroes — pilgrims, steppe khans, fierce warriors, musicians from the Celestial Empire and India, Germany and Russia, servants of the Zoroastrian cult, Buddhists, Taoists, rulers, as well as Soviet translators and soldiers in Afghanistan — exist in their circles of being, which are united by the music of the path and the eternal questioning about the world, freedom, and salvation. One of the heroes of the novel says that Nietzsche, with the music of "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and his own soul, conquered suffering. Is this really possible? Is there salvation in music?
