Boris Godunov

The figure of Boris Godunov evokes clear disdain among many historians. He is depicted as "treacherous", "hypocritical", "sly", and even "criminal", ultimately becoming the culprit of the Great Time of Troubles at the beginning of the 17th century, when the Russian State was practically destroyed. But is this really the case? Is Boris guilty of the terrible crime – the murder of Tsarevich Dmitry? Perhaps, Boris Godunov's entire life poses the most pressing questions for posterity. How should one rule to earn the love of one's subjects, and should supreme power strive for this love in defiance of the strategic interests of the state? What do betrayal and defection from the interests of the country mean in favor of current, clan-based benefits and preferences? Where is the measure with which the righteousness of rulers can be gauged, and what interests should power express and defend in order to earn the recognition of future generations? These and other questions are addressed in the book by the renowned Russian historian A.N. Bokhanov (1944–2019).
