The near future. Young Inuit Kovana goes seal hunting to undergo initiation like his ancestors.
But he is unsuccessful, and he ends up on a huge ice floe that has broken away from the mainland, together with a polar bear afflicted... by a mysterious disease.
University graduate Watanabe Yu sets out to sea with fishermen from his native village. He does not yet know what nightmares his decision will lead to, and he himself hides many secrets. Bioengineer Li Shili is working on developing plant hybrids capable of degrading plastic, achieving remarkable but extremely destructive results.
Ralph Gable, a former soldier and now an activist dedicated to saving dolphins, makes an emergency landing on a strange lifeless island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that is not on any map.
And soon, they will all encounter something terrible, a new form of life perfectly adapted to exist on a changed Earth, whose emergence could mean the end for the entire planet.
