Dark Alleys

Ivan Alexeevich Bunin (1870–1953) — a famous Russian writer, poet, and translator, Nobel Prize laureate in literature, who lived in exile for many years.
Bunin worked on «Dark Alleys» both in the pre-war and wartime years, from 1937 to 1945, but the plots of most stories in the collection revolve around the relationships between women and men. Love in Bunin's stories is candid and natural, the language is melodious in its own way, filled with colors and poetry. According to the writer, «all the stories in this book are only about love, about its «dark» and most often very gloomy and cruel alleys.» G. Adamovich, who defended him from the critics' attacks, noted that the book is «permeated with gratitude for life, for the world in which, despite all its imperfections,» there is happiness.
