The remarkable Russian artist V.I. Gau was the author of many watercolor portraits of the royal family and individuals close to the Russian throne. He aimed for his works to include "essential portrait resemblance" and the subordination of the image to the "lofty ideal." His works have stood the test of time: they have found their place in the main museums of the country - in the State Russian Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery.
