V.M. Zhirmunskiy (1891-1971), an outstanding philologist and academician, summarized many of his original observations in the field of theory and practice of verse in lectures delivered at Leningrad University several decades ago; much attention in the lectures is devoted to the study of the writer's biography, literary-critical assessments of the works of writers by their contemporaries, scientific bibliography, and other issues.
